Step into the landscape of 1813 and experience history as something you can see, follow, and explore. This dynamic community talk traces Laura Secord’s remarkable journey from Queenston to Decew House in Thorold, bringing together historical maps, geographic information systems (GIS), and digital storytelling through ArcGIS StoryMaps. Learn how old maps are carefully aligned with modern geography, how likely routes are reconstructed, and how familiar landscapes can reveal hidden layers of meaning. Designed for museum lovers and heritage enthusiasts, this talk offers a fresh way to engage with local history—where curation meets cartography, and the past comes alive on the map.

Sharon Janzen is the Maps, GIS, and Geospatial Data Specialist at Brock University, where she has been proudly employed for 29 years. In her role, she supports faculty, students, and researchers by helping them explore, analyze, and visualize the world through geographic information systems (GIS). She thrives on figuring things out—whether that means solving spatial challenges, uncovering insights in geospatial data, or helping others build confidence with mapping tools and technologies.

Sharon is passionate about sharing her knowledge and fostering curiosity, especially in GIS education and research support. Her work often involves collaboration, problem-solving, and guiding others as they explore questions about place, history, and community through maps and data.

Outside of work, Sharon enjoys watercolor painting, crafting, reading, and spending time outdoors—and is especially interested in how stories connected to place can be brought to life through maps.
